Why Won't My Dog Come When I Call Him ?

Training dogs is all about understanding how they think and learn. By using tools that they can understand, you can have your dog learn new behaviors more quickly and confidently.

The hardest thing to teach your dog to do is to come when called. Why? Because YOU must be more interesting than any possible distraction.

As usual with training a dog, the earlier you start, the easier the task. If you have been calling your dog with no results for five years, it will be harder to help him re-learn. But it IS possible.

First, choose a different word to use. If you have always said Rover, COME, then change it to Rover, HERE.

But before doing that be prepared to make the dog comply. Use a long 25-foot lead and when you say Rover, HERE ! sound happy and excited. If Rover does not come, gently pull on the lead and watch him run to you!

When he gets there make it the happiest day of his life! Reward him with a treat, a toy and generous praise and say U Good Dog U!  Always start INDOORS and when the dog is coming 90 percent of the time, then slowly move outdoors.
