Transitional Living | The perfect blending of two unique styles.

The only thing certain in life is change! Change is the common theme among those remodeling their homes Whatever, the reason, change creates the opportunity to fall in love with your home…again!

The only thing certain in life is change! My wife and I just celebrated the birth of our third child, a beautiful daughter named Madelyn! With our new addition came the realization that we have officially outgrown our home. Just like us, change is the common theme among those remodeling their homes. Maybe it is the need for an in-law suite for aging parents, or as the nest becomes empty, new space is available for that dreamed of master suite! Whatever, the reasons, these changes create the opportunity to fall in love with your home…again!

Finding the right remodeling contractor that will work hand-in-hand with you to understand your needs, wants and budget, as well as assisting in the design of your project is key. The right design-build remodeler will work with their clients to coordinate the perfect design and manage the process from beginning to end. As such, they are exposed to current and up-coming design trends and incorporate them into the design. In the Atlanta market, which is rooted in traditional home design, clients are attempting to harmoniously blend modern design elements with traditional. While, this seems impossible, the old adage, ‘Opposites do attract’ stands true and transitional design does just that! Transitional design is the harmonious blending of modern and traditional elements. It is a great choice to consider when renovating, especially in the Atlanta market.

The transitional color palette relies on soft colors like beige, tan and ivory that evoke a clean and serene atmosphere with dark browns adding contrast and depth. Straight and simple lines are essential to transitional design, with an occasional soft curve thrown in to add character. For instance, in the pictures attached, white shaker style cabinets with clean lines surround a dark stained bead board island. Warm hardwoods act as a traditional anchor to the stainless steel appliances and brushed nickel fixtures which add modern themes, culminating in a kitchen that exemplifies a transitional style.

What makes transitional design so unique is the inherent ability to allow for natural elements such as stone, granite and wood to play sophisticated roles in melding the two styles. It also allows for splashes of color such as: throw pillows, vases and art work, to be thrown in to add focal points. This is part of the appeal of transitional design; it is timeless, and allows for timeless elements to be the foundation and color and uniqueness to be added and changed as color trends ebb and flow.

Recent projects cover a wide spectrum of personalities from strong statements made with reclaimed wood to a timeless kitchen that complements a traditional 1920’s ranch home. Neutral walls and straight lines create an uncomplicated atmosphere while rich wood tones and a curved staircase provide interest and character. The blending of modern lighting with Mission-style cabinets further enhances transitional styles in new spaces.
