North Fulton Job Fair to Link Workers, Employees

A Leadership North Fulton team saw the needs of the community's unemployed as important, and set about connecting them with employers.

Job seekers in the area will get a helping hand on May 15 with the North Fulton Job Fair, which brings more than 25 companies to one location for on-the-spot interviews, and possibly even hiring.

Get2Work, part of the Leadership North Fulton Class of 2012, has organized the job fair at the Roswell Adult Center at 830 Grimes Bridge Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free to companies and job seekers who participate.

"We did some research and found it had been several years that there's been an actual North Fulton Job Fair, something that's been organized for the entire community," said Deborah Lanham, a member of team Get2Work – a project team of five individuals selected to participate in Leadership North Fulton's Class of 2012.

The Get2Work members said they're still hearing about the condition of the economy, and there are still many people out of work. So they wanted to connect employers with the unemployed, pooling resources to put on the event.

The North Fulton Job Fair is being sponsored by Leadership North Fulton and the , with help from the GA Department of Labor. In addition to companies interviewing for jobs, Georgia Perimeter College and Sandler Sales Institute will hold workshops to help job seekers.

Job Openings

Companies participating need to fill positions ranging from marketing and sales positions to restaurant-related services, such as servers and bartenders. Independent representatives will be sought for companies like Shaklee. Banks and financial advisors will be seeking workers, an accountant needs some office staff and one employer needs technicians to work with his sprinkler service.

The North Fulton Job Fair doesn't target college-aged applicants and definitely not high school students looking for summer jobs, but it is open to everyone. Employers often are looking to fill more permanent positions, such as Honeybaked Ham, which needs to fill store manager positions. A medical staffing company has health-care related positions to fill.

Education levels will vary from job to job, but many will require college and others at least a high school diploma.

Companies interested in participating can register for free through May 4.

Dress for the Job

Lanham was asked how job seekers should dress for the job fair, and she said they need to understand the environment where they want to work, and dress appropriately for that environment. Pepsi, Verizon and Comcast adopt business casual clothing while working, and may wear suits if they are in meetings. The YMCA's summer positions require a more casual type of attire.

"But I would say dress for success means don't show up in jeans and a T-shirt if you're talking to company like Suntrust," Lanham said.
