Georgia Shakespeare’s ' The Emperor & the Nightingale' is Delightful

'The Emperor and the Nightingale' is full of humor and will charm children and adults alike with cleverly funny songs, a gorgeous setting, and a tale that warms the heart.

I was recently invited to the opening Night of Georgia Shakespeare’s world premiere family musical "The Emperor and the Nightingale" where ancient China comes to life through song, dance and puppetry. I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful play and so did my 6-year-old great-nieces Jetta and Katie! This new musical is full of humor and will charm children and adults alike with cleverly funny songs, a gorgeous setting, and a tale that warms the heart.

Audiences are transported to the time of the Song Dynasty, where we meet the hysterical Music Master and his choir. Five marionettes are operated by one very talented and funny actor who gives each character a unique personality through silly voices in one of the musical’s most hilarious songs. The ailing Emperor is preparing to sing for the upcoming Lantern Festival, when he hears the elegant, yet simple Nightingale’s song and sees her graceful, fluttering dance. He is captivated and decides to keep her caged to sing for him. The humiliated Music Master, who has been replace by the bird, decides to get his revenge by presenting the Emperor with a colorful, mechanical Jade Bird that causes the Emporer to lose interest in the Nightingale and she escapes into the forest. Learn how the Emperor realizes that true beauty lies within and how he is transformed into the wisest ruler in the land.

Filled with drums, beautiful ribbon dances, gorgeous costumes, an exciting Dragon Parade, and lots of audience participation, this show will keep your children mesmerized for the entire one hour performance.  Be sure to linger after the show, when all of the actors come into the lobby still in their costumes for pictures with the kids and autographs.
