Let the Music Carry You to Nashville

Nashville's the place to go to let the music move you while you listen to a few guitar riffs, take in a show or two and just go with the flow.

I’m a music fan. Classical to classic rock, country to pop, I enjoy good music. So, for my money, Nashville is a great destination. There’s Music Row – on 16th and 17th Avenues – with its historic sites, such as RCA’s famous Studio B as well as its upscale restaurants and bars in the heart of Music City USA.

The Grand Ole Opry is always hosting "A" List talent, as is the historic site of the Opry, the famous Ryman Auditorium. And right now there are also some great exhibits and tributes to some of country music’s biggest legends – which will give you insight into the lives of those who made country music what it is today.

Chet Atkins had a sound all his own. With his Gretch Country Gentleman guitar, his sound eventually became the “Nashville sound” – a smoother country music sound that helped broaden country music’s appeal.

Atkins went on to become one of RCA records most phenomenal producers, working with such legends as Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Perry Como, Waylon Jennings and Elvis Presley.

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of Atkins’ passing and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is remembering him with the “Chet Atkins – Certified Guitar Player” exhibit. It’s just one of many exhibits on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Of course, you can’t visit Nashville without a visit to the Grand Ole Opry, it would be un-American.

Take a backstage tour of the Opry and get a little music history under your belt. For instance, did you know that country music star Alan Jackson once delivered mail to the “Opry Post Office” – where he now he has his own mailbox? And where you aware that the Opry has played host to more than just country music artists? Music industry giants such as Elton John, ZZ Top and James Taylor have also performed at the Opry.

As you might expect, the Opry has some great shows coming up soon, including performances by Larry Gatlin, Rascal Flatts, the Oak Ridge Boys, Steel Magnolia, Collin Raye – and the 80th birthday celebration of country music legend George Jones in September.

Speaking of country music legends, why not travel about 65 miles west of Nashville and visit Loretta Lynn’s Ranch?

You’ll get a peek into the life of the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and can even participate in one of the ranch’s many events, including Loretta Lynn’s Bi-Annual Trail Ride.  It’s a great chance to camp out, meet new friends and see some beautiful country from what I’ve always thought was the best vantage point around – atop a good horse.

Nashville’s a little more than four hours away from Johns Creek. Just get over to I-75 North and head toward Chattanooga, taking I-24 West at Exit 2 soon after you’ve crossed into Tennessee.  I-24 takes you the rest of the way into Nashville.
