Great Summer Reads for Teens

From first love to dystopian adventure, we found the hottest commodities for summer reading.

The young adult book market is strong this year with break-out hits and amazing sequels. From hot dystopians to romances and a thriller, here's a round-up of some great reads for teens - and moms like me who love the escapism of a world with neither babies nor bills.

Divergent by Veronica Roth

This gritty dystopian is my top contender for fun summer reads. Beatrice lives in a society where each sixteen-year-old must select the faction in which they'll spend the rest of their life-- Abenegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, or Dauntless. Will she choose her parents' life of self-sacrifice or follow her heart? With a richly woven world and high stakes, I couldn't put it down.

Invincible Summer by Hannah Moskowitz

Teens looking for realistic contemporary will love this beautiful and heart-wrenching story of one boy's life, told through four summers at the beach. Love, loss, family and figuring out who you are in relation to all three makes this book one that's hard to forget. And it made me pick up Albert Camus again, too.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Most teens are already hot for this dystopian adventure series about heroine Katniss Everdeen and her fight against a cruel government regime. They're currently filming the movie, so if you haven't hopped on the bandwagon, now's the time. All three books are exciting, well-written and immersive.

Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan

A darkly humorous contemporary so good that I keep rereading the dog-eared bits. It's the story of two very different boys named Will Grayson, each with his own problems and each orbiting the zaniest character, a flamboyantly gay teen named Tiny Cooper. With deep insights into growing up and flashes of literary brilliance, this one's bound to become a classic.

Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann

This standalone paranormal thriller is a rollercoaster of creepy. Kendall lives in a small town, hiding her OCD and dating the same boy that's been her best friend since birth. When he disappears, she starts hearing voices. Is she the next in line? Lisa McMann recently did a signing at the Mansell Barnes & Noble, so you might be able to snag a signed copy, if you act soon.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Honestly, the sweetest teen romance I've ever read. When Anna starts school in Paris, she has to make friends and navigate a new country and a new language. Meeting the charming, but taken, Etienne St. Clair, only makes things more difficult... and wonderful.
