Tiny Dog Looking for Forever Home

Smitty is described as entertaining and affectionate.

Smitty is an adorable little Maltese mix who weighs less than eight pounds. He was recently found in the middle of a busy road by a good samaritan family who searched without success to find his owner. Perhaps this was a good thing: Poor Smitty, who is about 8 years old, was covered with matted fur, was not neutered, had a collar but no ID tag nor microchip, and was clearly scared to death.

Now in a loving foster home provided by a volunteer from Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, Smitty looks like a different dog.  All of his fur had to be shaved off because of the mats, and he has since been mistaken for a Chinese Crested Hairless.  Of course, the organization had him tested for heartworm disease (which was negative), vaccinated and neutered.

Smitty’s  foster mom says that he is an entertaining and affectionate little dog. He can be quite lively, and acts much younger than his age. He gets along extremely well with the larger dogs in his foster home, and also does well with the dogs closer to his own size during his walks. Unfortunately, he finds cats quite fun to chase, and would not be suitable in a house with a cat that will not stand up to him. (He leaves the cats alone that don’t run from him.) Smitty loves taking walks, but also likes to curl up with someone in the evening.

This little dog was not housebroken when he first arrived, but his foster mom says he is doing very well with his housetraining lessons. She says he is a very smart little guy and learns quickly.  According to her, as long as he is taken outside at regular intervals, he rarely has any more “accidents.”  Smitty is not a yappy dog, but will bark when someone comes to the door.
