Library Fun Day, Clay Classes Will Entertain, Educate the Kiddies

Learning a song or meeting a kangaroo are just a few of the fun things to do with the kids this week.

Spring is here and kids have the opportunity to learn about camping, animals, plants, safety and much more. At night, enjoy one of two family theater classics presented by young adults for kids.

Where/When: , 9560 Spruill Road, Johns Creek; Saturday, March 19, 4-5 p.m.

Why Go:  Saturday is Fun Day at Northeast/Spruill Fulton County Library for kids 5-9. For this one hour, kids will enjoy crafts, stories, face-painting and more. Registration required. 

Patrons are encouraged but not required to donate a gently used book.

Why Go: A wonderful class to begin your child's love of clay. The Johns Creek Community Arts Center's youngest students will be introduced to the basics of hand building clay projects through coil, pinch and slab techniques, while creating individual works of art.  They will finish each project using colors of glazes and/or acrylic paint. 

Six lessons will be from March 21 to May 9 (no lessons April 4 or May 2).

Price: $150 for six classes. Supplies and clay are included in the price.

Why Go: Kids can learn about community service with you by joining Kroger for the 3rd annual Healthy Notions “Show Love with Your Soles” shoe drive finale. This campaign is comprised of a series of supporting volunteer collection efforts to gather shoe donations. Volunteers and donors come together to drop-off, process and sort donations given to benefit orphaned children in Haiti and Dominican Republic

Price: Free. Donations of old shoes. 

Where/When: , 10495 Woodstock Road, Roswell; Friday, March 18, 5:30 p.m.

Why Go:  Wildlife Wonders will present a wide variety of live animals for the children to learn about and even touch. Some exotic animals kids may encounter are a kangaroo, alligator, python, hedgehog, fennec fox, monkey, parrot, tarantula, and more. What a great opportunity for “city” kids to interact unusual, exotic and friendly animals.

Price: $20, residents; $30, non-residents

Where/When: 850 Hembree Road, Roswell, (Hembree Park); Saturday, March 19, 5 p.m.

Why Go:  Enjoy a safe and fun family camping experience in Roswell at Hembree Park. This is a great way to introduce camping to kids. So, grab your camping gear and camp with your buddies. Hembree Park will provide the s’mores, hotdogs, hot chocolate, breakfast treats and a nice warm campfire. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Price: $38, residents (family of four); $57, non-residents (family of four); $3 for each additional person.

Where/When: , 9135 Willeo Road, Roswell; Sunday, March 20, 1 p.m.

Why Go:  Join Lisa Cole of the Horticulture Department for a tour of the gardens on this First Day of Spring!  Discover plants just peeping out of the ground, uncover dainty first flowers, gain knowledge in folklore and medicinal uses of the early plants of spring.  This program is fun and informative for kids of all ages. Included with General Admission.

Price: Included with general admission: $8 adults, $5 children

Where/When: 1240 Buford Road, Cumming (Lucci's Little Italy); Saturday, March 19, noon-2 p.m.

Why Go:  Lucci's Little Italy will host a Safety Day, with proceeds benefitting Safe Kids Forsyth. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department will have hands-on opportunities for kids to see patrol cars, fire trucks, horses and other public safety equipment while parents can learn valuable tips to keep their children safe from injury.

Price: Free. Purchases will benefit Safe Kids Forsyth.

Where/When: , 4075 Spot Road, Cumming; Saturday, March 19, 2-3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Junior Girl Scouts are invited to participate in activities to earn their Wildlife badge. Naturalists will lead scouts along the trails of Sawnee Mountain while leaning about wildlife. All activities are from the Junior Girl Scout Badge Handbook. Registration is open to troops or individual scouts. Badge is not included.

Price: $6 for county residents; $7.20 for non-county residents.

Where/When: , 8135 Majors Road, Cumming; Thursday March 17, 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m.

Why Go: A Pi Day Fun Run/Walk that is 3.14 miles around the PGMS and Shiloh Point campuses. The PTSA is sponsoring this event and the proceeds earned from students registering for the Fun Run will go toward supporting the schools Grizzly Great Day of Giving (G3 Day). Times for the runs vary based on age: 8th grade – 9:30 a.m., 7th grade – 12:45 p.m., and 6th grade – 2:30 p.m.

Price: $10. Proceeds will benefit the PGMS G3 Day.

Where/When: , 3595 Webb Bridge Road, Alpharetta; Saturday, March 19,  2 p.m.

Why Go: What a great way to have kids see an American classic. Alpharetta High School presents “Oklahoma!” The musical celebrates America’s pioneering spirit with boot stomping energy. Local cowboys and farmers rivalry sets a colorful background for Laurey, a local farm girl. Memorable songs, a “dream ballet,” and comedic subplots secure a great entertainment event for the entire family.

Price: $10 advance ticket sales

Where/When: OFF Broadway Dance, 12315 Crabapple Road, Alpharetta 
                         Friday, March 18 & 25 at 7:30 p.m.
                         Saturday, March 19 & 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: The Disney classic Cinderella comes to kids, by kids, from OFF Broadway. With music including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and the classic "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," this musical will charm its way into your heart, and remind you that dreams really can come true.
