Johns Creek Veterans Plan Outreach

The Johns Creek Veterans Association will hold 2 open houses this weekend at Newtown Park.

The Johns Creek Veterans Association is asking the public to come out and learn what it is all about.

The organization will hold an open house between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Both open houses will be held at Park Place at Newtown Park.

Members will be on hand to answer questions about the organization and the process to join its ranks. Food and drinks will be available.

Founded in 2012, the association is an independent veterans group and offers resources about benefits and entitlements. It also plans events geared towards former military personnel.

Some of its activities include attending a Gwinnett Braves game; a North Georgia winery tour; an honorary Color Guard; and the upcoming Johns Creek Veterans Golf Tournament on March 24, which is a fundraiser for the John Creek Veterans Memorial Walk.

The Memorial Walk, slated to open later this year at Newtown Park, "will be a place to reflect on the sacrifice and service of those in uniform, and will serve as a focal point for patriotic activities in Johns Creek," according to the city.

The association's members are also recording the stories of veterans' experiences in the military for an oral history project.
