Johns Creek Veterans Association to Host Memorial Day Picnic

The picnic will be held on Saturday, May 25 at Newtown Park.

Johns Creek vets are hoping to provide an old-fashioned American celebration this Memorial Day weekend in the form of its first picnic.

The Johns Creek Veterans Association will host a Memorial Day Picnic on Saturday, May 25 at Newtown Park, according to a recent announcement.

Locals will dine on traditional American picnic fare, while enjoying their holiday weekend and meeting the "people who made history."

"We honor the memory of all those who died serving this great country by coming together at the future site of the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk. This is going to be as All-American as you can get," said Gerry Lewis, president of the JCVA. "We're going to have hotdogs, hamburgers, main street Americans and Veterans. It's going to be a lot of fun."

Visitors will be able to walk the pathway at Newtown Park where the Memorial Walk will be laid out, says the announcement. . Paver samples and order forms will be available at the picnic. Construction is tentatively set to begin in July with the opening planned for November 2014.

According to the city, the JCVA will also be displaying recorded histories of some of its members. The Association, working with Johns Creek High School, has started the Library of Congress Veterans History Project to capture the histories of veterans in the Johns Creek area, starting with those who served in World War II.

The picnic runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food and drinks will be available on the Park Place patio while supplies last.
