Giving Back on 9/11

How will you honor the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in your family?

As many others will be doing this Sunday, my family and I will take a moment to think about the men, women and children who lost their lives 10 years ago.

I can remember the day clearly. Myself and my newborn baby, just a day shy of being a month old, were at home alone. My husband was at work. As my baby slept on my chest, the news alert came on and live footage of the burning towers covered the screen.

Although I knew my husband was safe at work, I also knew that many of his family members lived in New York. As calls began and reassurances were given, I remember counting my blessings that my family was safe.

Others were not as fortunate. Many lost fathers, others lost mothers, and many more have lost extended family and loved ones. For them, the anniversary of this time will bring heartache and, hopefully, some sense of closure.

This Sunday, the footage is sure to be shown on television and kids may ask for some details of what happened. Some kids will hear the stories and not understand any of what happened while others will begin to hear it and be able to see how it has impacted us over the past 10 years.

In our family, we have a tradition. We bake a cake or cupcake together and take it to the local fire and police stations. For us, it is a way to thank all the men and women who risked their lives then and continue to risk them today. It is a way to feel as if we, as a family, are giving back to those who are sworn to protect us.

How will your family spend 9/11? Will you teach your children a life lesson? Will you take a moment for yourself to reflect on how your life has changed over the last 10 years and how it may continue to change?
