Fowler YMCA's Swim Team: Champions Of The Water

The Fowler Fins, which swims out of nearby Peachtree Corners YMCA, captured a big win on Feb. 16 edging out two strong teams for the championship.

On the heels of an undefeated 9-0 dual meet season, the Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA swam its way to an impressive win over seven other local YMCA teams attending the Metro Atlanta YMCA Swimming Championships on February 16, 2013, at the Cumming Aquatic Center.

Over 600 swimmers from age five to 18 competed in 84 different events at the meet. The Fowler Fins scored 1670.0 points to edge out second-place Tull-Gwinnett YMCA with 1517.0 points, and third-place Carl Sanders/Buckhead YMCA with 956.0 points.

At the end of event 20, the Medley Relays, Tull-Gwinnett and Fowler were tied at 184.0 with both teams winning the exact same age groups as they did in the Free Relays.

Fowler pulled ahead 535.5 to 446.0 after event 32, the short Free events. Fowler was led by wins from Freestylers Melissa Bischoff (19.78, 6 & Under Girls 25 Free), Luke Sandberg (19.26, 6 & Under Boys 25 Free), Georgia Whitmer (30.84, 9-10 Girls 50 Free), Alex Whitesides (32.30, 9-10 Boys 50 Free), Riley Stark (29.40, 11-12 Girls 50 Free), Ashton Hattori (28.42, 13-14 Girls 50 Free), and Dutch Danskin (25.95, 13-14 Boys 50 Free.)

At the end of event 44, the Backstroke events, Fowler still had the edge over Tull-Gwinnett 801.5 to 719.0. Key wins for Fowler in the Backstroke events went to Keely Sandberg (35.25, 9-10 Girls 50 Back) and Charlotte Whitmer (32.34 Girls 11-12 50 Back.)

By the end of event 54, the long Freestyle events, Fowler had extended its lead to 203 points, 1093.0 to 890.0. Notable wins came from Georgia Whitmer (1:09.95, Girls 9-10 100 Free), Peter Sacca (1:21.50, Boys 9-10 100 Free), Andrea Thornell (1:04.20, Girls 11-12 100 Free), Anna Roy (1:00.22, Girls 13-14 100 Free), Dutch Danskin (57.09, Boys 13-14 100 Free.)

Through event 64, the 100 IM, the Fowler Fins saw their lead over Tull-Gwinnett shrink to 169 points, 1265.0 to 1096.0. Fowler had strong wins turned in by Cameron Schremmer (1:22.28, Boys 9-10) and Emma Harrison (1:10.47, Girls 13-14.) 

As the meet progressed through event 74, the Breaststroke events, Tull-Gwinnett continued to gain ground on Fowler, pulling to within 147 points at 1458.0 to 1311.0. Fowler’s lone Breaststroke win came from Jane Hensley (42.11, Girls 9-10 50 Breast.)

Fowler finished strong through event 84, the Fly events, ending the meet with a 153 point final margin of victory over Tull-Gwinnett. Key Fowler wins in the Fly events went to Holland Danskin (33.65, Girls 11-12 50 Fly) and Anna Roy (29.97, Girls 13-14 50 Fly.)

“We are extraordinarily proud of our swimmers,” said Head Coach Mark Schremmer, a former Tulane University and current U.S. Masters swimmer with multiple national and world rankings. 

“We trained them on technique early in the season. After that we worked hard on endurance and then really stressed speed work towards the end of the season.”

Coach Schremmer went on to say, “Our swimmers worked harder than they ever have before, and it’s great to see them rewarded for their efforts and recognized for their achievements.”

The Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA is located at 5600 W. Jones Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners. The Fowler Family YMCA is a registered USA Swimming Club and is open to swimmers from age 5 through 18 who can successfully complete a length of the pool. Swimmer abilities range from novice competitive swimmer to USA Swimming athletes who compete at the highest level of swimming in the state and region.
