A Week of Winter Wonderland

It may have taken a week and it may have been inconvenient, but the winter storm made us all slow down and enjoy the snow - and even display a little creativity.

As the sun beams down, melting the last of the snow dumped on the area over the last week, people in and around Johns Creek are beginning to get back into their routines; running weekend errands, getting the kids to and from Scout meetings and family events or preparing for church after a Sunday missed. But for the better part of the second week of January, Johns Creek looked more like a town in northern Ohio than northern Georgia.

It was more snow at one time than most people can recall in recent memory – and it made for a lot of inconvenience, innovation and inspiration.

“We were open every day,” said Katherine Lawson, shift manager at the Starbucks at The Village at Park Ridge on Old Milton Parkway. The head barista said the coffee shop remained open - at least partly each day - to serve the many “walk-in” customers they traditionally have in the immediate area.  It gave folks a chance to get out of the house, enjoy a brisk walk in their "winter wonderland" neighborhoods and get inside the warmth of the nearby coffee shop to thaw out.

“We had plenty of coffee,” Lawson explained, “but we ran out of baked goods because our delivery trucks couldn’t get through the icy roads.”

Supplies were a concern for supermarkets as well.  When customers emerged by Thursday, they found entire swaths of shelves empty because suppliers still weren’t able to get through the icy conditions that covered all of metro Atlanta.  But there was still plenty to serve the needs of the snowbound, and grocery stocks were replenished by the end of the week.

The Waffle House was open the entire time, but most restaurants in the area, like El Porton on Jones Bridge Road, closed on Monday and Tuesday.  They were finally able to re-open on Wednesday – and soon were filled with patrons just wanting to get out of the house.

“It was cabin fever,” laughed Miguel Perez, manager of the Mexican bar and grill. “We have become so busy now that I don’t even feel like we were closed for two days.”

Indeed, by Friday night, virtually every eatery in Johns Creek was open again – and operating at full capacity due to the fact that many people had been couped up for several days.

The kids were out of school all week and took full advantage of the heavy snow to slide down hills, wage snowball wars, make snow ice cream, build snowmen and even construct an igloo or two.

The roads, for the most part, were cleared quickly – though some wooded areas that haven’t had the luxury of extended sunlight still have a few small icy patches.

In general, the heavy snow caused more minor inconveniences than any real serious problems – but it will certainly result in conversation and pleasant memories for years to come.
