9/11 Memorials, Family Festivals This Weekend

Kick off fall with family festivals, 9/11 memorials.

Where/When: , 3150 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, 30022, Saturday, Sept. 10, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

Why Go?: The Johns Creek Farmers Market offers locally grown fruits and vegetables, honey and homemade jellies, pastas and sauces, freshly made breads, and scores of other items to whet the palate. The market is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and on Sept. 10 will be located on the field with the rest of the festival activities and vendors. The Fall Family Festival, which kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs to 3 p.m., will feature many new attractions. Among the new activities will be multiple bounce houses, a Velcro-wall, a bungee run, and a radar gun to test pitching speed. The city will bring back old favorites, such as an inflatable slide, carnival games, a magician, face-painting, and finger painting. will exhibit some of its animals.

Why Go? A presentation of colors, the National Anthem, opening prayer, placing of the memorial wreath, bagpipes to Amazing Grace, retiring of the colors, and a benediction by Dr. Don Martin. Welcome/introduction of speakers (Gary D. George, Alpharetta director of public safety), Mayor Arthur Letchas (City of Alpharetta), Mayor Joe Lockwood (City of Milton), Representative Lynne Riley (Georgia State representative), Sen. John Albers (Georgia State Senate)

Where/When: Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill St., Roswell, 30075, Saturday, Sept. 10, 8:30-10 a.m.

Why Go? Roswell, in conjunction with the Roswell American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Roswell Rotary Club will host an event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Why Go? “Fundamentals of Fiction: Writing Stories That Enthrall the Reader From Beginning to End" will be led by Jeffrey Stepakoff, author and former Hollywood writer. Topics include: elements of fiction story structure and storytelling; story elements, plot points and use of creative writing techniques to add intrigue. For all level of writers of adult, teen and children's fiction.

Why Go? This informative and highly interactive workshop is designed to get your questions answered. Allison B. Vrolijk, Esq., will outline parental rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in easy-to-understand terms and share tips to navigate the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. The floor will remain open throughout the workshop for questions.

Why Go? Relive the early days of old Milton County at this family event. Come experience historical demonstrations, old-time games, bluegrass music, storytelling, children's crafts and more.

Why Go?: Help the Chattahoochee Nature Center honor grandparents on Grandparents’ Day at a good ol’ fashioned ice cream social. 

Price: Grandparents are free; everyone is $3.

Where/When: , 235 Castleberry Road, Cumming, 30040, Sunday Sept. 11, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

Why Go?: The Forsyth Family Fest is an all-day event at the Cumming Fairgrounds beginning with a community worship service at 10 a.m., an afternoon of free activities and giveaways for kids of all ages, concluding with a community patriotic extravaganza featuring the music of Riley Biederer, Chris Cauley, Steve Amerson and local high school bands, drumlines and choruses. Top off with a fireworks display.
