Tiny Cat Caged Most of Her Life

Small cat learning to explore the big world.

This week's featured pet has such a sad history. The cat program volunteers of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue first learned about this 11-month-old cat through an email from a concerned pet lover in South Georgia.

It seems that when her neighbors first took in a stray kitten, they decided that she would eat less — thereby saving them some money — if she were kept confined instead of allowed to roam around the house. She consequently lived most of her life in a small cage and was only allowed out twice a day to use a litter box. Essentially, she was a prisoner for almost all her life.

When hearing of her plight, Angels Among Us volunteers voted unanimously to take this little cat, whom they promptly named Angel, into their adoption program.

Although Angel has only been with the group for a short period of time, everyone has already fallen in love with this sweet little girl. She is very small at only 5 pounds, weighing about half of what a cat her age usually weighs. (It is unclear if her growth has been stunted because of her background, or if she would have been this small under any circumstances.)

She was immediately taken  to Peach Pets Animal Hospital, in Johns Creek, and she was pronounced healthy in spite of her size. After being tested, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, little Angel was pronounced "good to go."

Angel was scared and confused when she was first brought into the organization's cat adoption center at the Johns Creek PETCO. How strange everything must be for her after living such a secluded life. However, the resilient little cat soon learned that she enjoyed affection, and would instantly start to purr when petted. She was initially anxious when taken out of her double box at the center, but is quickly learning that it's fun to be able to explore a larger world. She's very interested in absolutely everything, and now she is eager to come out all the time.

In only a few days, she has already progressed by leaps and bounds. She loves playing, and will have endless fun with her toy mice and balls. She seems to like the other cats in the adoption center, but has not yet found a kitty young enough to be her buddy.

Volunteers are confident that Angel has started to forget her former life and enjoy her new one. Her new owner(s) will need to understand that her adjustment to a real home may take a little bit of time, and that she would probably do better if she starts off in just one room until she feels secure enough to venture out into the rest of the house. This patience will be richly rewarded when this sweet cat learns how wonderful life can be in her forever home.

Like all of Angels' rescued cats, Angel has been altered and is up to date on vaccinations, has been tested for feline leukemia, feline AIDS and heartworm disease, has been provided parasite control treatment, and is micro-chipped. She is a very tidy cat and is good about using her litter box.
