The Wines, Spirits & Beers of March

Celebrate St. Paddy's Day with Irish whiskey, Peru's Pisco Sour, BBQ, Beer & Bourbon, Naked Wines and more.

March is the month for that favorite party, the time we celebrate Saint Paddy who chased the snakes out of Ireland and converted the heathen. But March 2012 is a month of much more. There are craft beers to seriously contemplate, Pisco Sours to sip in honor of Peru, the High Museum of Art’s magnificent wine tastings and auction, orgasmically grown wines to try. It all starts this weekend with a fine fest celebrating beer, barbecue, babes, and bourbon although not necessarily in that order.

Friday, March 2, sees a celebration of Peru’s national brandy, Pisco, from 9-11 p.m. Friday at the downtown Baraonda Ristorante & Bar on Peachtree Street. It is a celebration commemorating the renovation of Baraonda bar. Vintner Pisco Porton from Ica, Peru, that country’s oldest working Pisco-producing bodega, offers free Pisco drinks, the Classic Pisco Sour, the Pisco Italiano, and the Pisco Peachtree “Southern Flair.”

Show respect because the Pisco Sour is Peru’s national cocktail. Once the last note of Peru’s national anthem ends, everyone must immediately drink the last drop of  Pisco Sour. Pisco is a yellowish-green colored wine made from Muscat grapes first cooked in copper stills like a brandy then left to age in big clay receptacles. (In Chile it is aged in oak barrels.) A Pisco Sour mixes Pisco with lime juice, simple syrup, bitters, and a dash of egg whites, shaken, and served poured over a glass full of ice.

Also, on March 3 from 4-6 p.m. Niko’s Wine Corner on Crogan Street in downtown Lawrenceville celebrates its two-year anniversary offering Naked Wines from Oregon’s Naked Winery & Orgasmic Wine Company. You can sip Foreplay Chardonnay, Dominatrix Pinot Noir, and Naughty Chardonnay – all wines “orgasmically grown” in the vintner’s northwest wineries in Oregon and Washington. Experts from Atlanta’s Artisan Vines Distributing Corporation say the Naked Vines owners whimsically adopted wine names like Penetration Cabernet Sauvigon, Naked Pinot Gris, Vixen Syrah and others as a marketing ploy.
