River Trail 8th Graders Raise Big Bucks for Charity
What can a charitable organization do with $1052.72? Plenty – thanks to Ms. Kim and her 8th grade reading classes at River Trail Middle School, five lucky charities will receive money raised by her students while learning persuasion techniques.
To promote an authentic learning experience using persuasion, Ms. Kim’s students were asked to create a poster using persuasive language while representing a charity of their choice. Each student from every class presented his or her poster to the class demonstrating persuasive techniques and speaking skills.
After taking a vote, a charity was chosen to represent the entire class. The students then created brochures of that organization to convince their friends and families to donate.
Five classes competed against each other trying to raise the most money for charity. The winner was Ms. Kim’s 8th period. They collected more than $360 which will be donated to their favorite charity, Invisible Children. Together all of Ms. Kim’s classes collected $1052.72 to donate to their chosen charities, which include the following: Angelman Syndrome Foundation (period 2), Action Against Hunger (period 3), Progeria Foundation (period 6), and Free the Slaves (period 7).
The winning class received a pizza party donated by Jet's Pizza.
