Fourth-grade students at Findley Oaks Elementary School recently culminated their study of Native Americans with a parent presentation and potlatch. Students had spent several weeks learning about Native American tribes as a part of their social studies curriculum.

The unit culminated with a research project, carried out in collaboration with the school’s media specialist, in which each student delved deeper into one tribe. Students used a variety of online and print resources to discover information on the culture of their tribes, including food, clothing and shelter. Students all dressed in costumes that represented the traditional dress of their respective tribes and also created models of their shelters. Students enjoyed presenting their work to their parents and celebrated their hard work with a potlatch afterward.
