Chattahoochee Keeps Title Hopes Alive

Chattahoochee Cougars trounced Sequoyah 31-12 to stay in a three-way tie for the Region 7-AAAA lead.

With the possibility of having to win the rest of its games to repeat as Region 7-AAAA champion, Chattahoochee took care of business Friday night with a 31-12 win over Sequoyah.

The Cougars improved their record to 6-1 overall and in the region and remain in a tie for first place in the region with Johns Creek and Lambert, which also are 6-1.

If the regular-season ends with that same three-way tie, the tiebreaker may come down to point differential. Friday’s 19-point win may come in handy.

Travis Marshall threw two touchdown passes to Will Johnson and C.J. Leggett scored on two touchdown runs for Chattahoochee.

The Cougars scored first with 5:52 left in the first quarter when on second-and-20 from their own 35, Marshall threw a short pass to Johnson, who promptly ran 65 yards for a touchdown.

On the Cougars’ next possession, they moved the ball down inside the Sequoyah 10, and Leggett scored from the 9 for a 14-0 lead.

The Chiefs responded when sophomore quarterback Lex Lauletta connected with Stuart Glassic for a touchdown. The extra point was no good, but the Cougars' lead was reduced to 14-6.

Chattahoochee responded by moving the ball down into Sequoyah territory, thanks to the running of running backs Chase Nelson and Leggett. Leggett scored from the 5 to put the Cougars up 21-6 at halftime.

Chattahoochee got the ball to start the second half, and once again moved the ball deep into Sequoyah territory. Then, on third-and-goal, Marshall found Johnson on a touchdown pass and Chattahoochee went up 28-6.

The Cougars got three more points on the leg of senior Kevin Hady’s 37-yard field goal with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

The Chiefs managed to put more points on the board when Glassic scored on a 19-yard run.  The Chiefs tried to go for two, but were denied by the Cougars' defense, making the final score 31-12.

Chattahoochee hosts winless Cass next Friday night on Senior Night. Johns Creek is at South Forsyth next week, while Lambert hosts Rome.
