SALON BAPTISTE HOSTS THE MATH IS MY FRIEND, INC. OPEN HOUSE
FOR CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY
DULUTH, GA – Math Is My Friend, Inc.(MIMF) - Salon
Baptiste hosted an open house inviting the community to come out and enroll
their children into the MIMF program. Math
is My Friend, Inc. is a non-profit organization that focuses on Closing the
Achievement Gap in Math. Salon Baptiste
understands the importance of Math as a means to achieving academic excellence
and has been a proud sponsor since the inception of the program. Parents came
out and signed their students up for the 3rd- 6th grade
Saturday morning classes to be held at the Johns Creek/Suwanee location,
starting in Sept. 2012 (limited slots still available).
Math Is My Friend, Co-Founder, Vanessa Calhoun, says,
“Today, math skills are critically needed to compete in our global economy and
the development of these skills, at an early age, is crucial to building the
confidence needed for children to excel.”
Salon Baptiste, Owner, Cheryl Baptiste shares, “Salon
Baptiste wants to give back to our community.
In today’s market, students who excel in math have higher future earning
potential and are better prepared to compete in today’s job market. We believe Math
Is My Friend is a great program because not only does it help students excel in
math, but it provides an opportunity for members of the community to volunteer
and get involved as well.”
Math Is My Friend Co-Founder, Tricia Chambers,
states, "Our program targets students who are struggling in math. We believe that our unique combination of
Math Trainers that care, access to tools for success, measurable goals, family
inclusion and real world connections is what keeps the students engaged, successful,
and wanting to come back."
During the course of the school year, students will
work in small group sessions with Math Trainers on Saturday mornings, receive a
netbook to keep upon completion of the program, be required to do on-line
training during the week, and will have access to Trainers during the week and
weekends from home via phone or on-line. To help parents better understand the
program provided to their children, parents workshops will be given to the
parents to enable them to support their child’s math skills development. Tricia Chambers concludes with “the students
really enjoyed learning math in a fun but challenging way and the results from
the 2011-2012 school year were excellent.
All students in the Johns Creek/Suwanee class passed the CRCT and 13% of
all students tested into the highest category(Exceeds). We are quite proud of our MIMF students and
we thank all of our sponsors and volunteers.”
